Mental Health 101

What is mental health? Mental health describes our state of being emotionally and cognitively (our ability to think clearly or process information). There is truly no health without mental health. It colors everything: how we think, feel and act, how we deal with stress and relate socially.

Our mental health is constantly changing

Just like our body’s aches, pains and digestive issues are in constant flux, so is our mental health. With our brain as our control center, our mental health is always changing based on our experiences and environment. What is mental health? Learn about mental health. The relationship between what we think, feel and how we (re)act is key to understanding our mental health.

As many as 1 in 5 teens will experience a mental health challenge. And, although recovery is totally possible, even from acute problems, only HALF get the help they need.

Instead, too many suffer in silence, often leading to a downward spiral of deteriorating health, unhealthy ways of coping, and even resorting to ending pain by ending one’s life. (Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds.)

The more we can understand what it feels like and how to explain when we start to feel bad, the quicker and easier we can feel better, and get back to getting the most out of life.
